BACKGROUND
Although she knows it's probably not true, that it's most likely nostalgia talking, Sayuri likes to imagine she could've stayed at the Yamashita Revue forever, if her father hadn't pressured her to marry. If she hadn't been brought up to put her family before herself. As it is, she retired before achieving her much-desired top star promotion, at age 30, walking right into a marriage to a tech millionaire she only knew superficially through her father. She did it for her father's investments in her, she did it for her family name, but some things she retained, some things stayed. She didn't grow her hair out after 10+ years as an otoko yaku, she still dressed androgynously, much to her husband's dismay, not to mention her father's, and she kept seeing her two exes, current Yurigumi otoko yaku top star, Inaba Otowa, and current Baragumi actress, Machi Kazuko, although they were busy with their lives at the Revue and Sayuri was busy with very little. She tried keeping up a model career, but soon enough became more of a stay-at-home housewife. Something she detested.
Three years into her imprisonment in her father's gilded cage, former Baragumi onna yaku top star, Mai Miho, contacted Sayuri to enquire as to whether she could be interested to take part in a new project for former Baragumi dancers called Variety. She had three other dancers besides herself interested and they'd be doing small-scale shows showcasing Mai's choreography in the style of old-school Baragumi shows. Jumping at the chance to have a taste of showbusiness again, Sayuri eagerly accepted.
Among the other dancers engaged was the former otoko yaku top star, Hanae Sayuri (stage name), known simply as Sayuri-san, and the 46-year-old dancer immediately sparked an attraction in Sayuri, now returning to her old Revue nickname, Sara, to avoid confusing the two. Throughout her work with Variety, the two actresses, 13 years apart, formed a strong bond and Sayuri-san helped propelling Sayuri-now-Sara into a less hateful future.
